Most people have unwanted body hair and turn to waxing, shaving and tweezing for removal. These methods will have to be done repeatedly to achieve a hairless look, and it can be challenging to keep up with these routines, which are both monotonous and time-consuming. If you’re tired of your hair removal routine, laser hair removal is the perfect solution for unwanted body hair. This method is safe; laser hair removal will provide you with a smooth, stubble-free body.
To decide whether this treatment is right for you, you must first understand what happens under your skin’s surface during your treatment, and the following guide will tell you everything you need to know about hair follicles and hair growth.
Hair Follicles
When you look closely at your skin, you will notice tiny holes called pores, and these little openings are the gateways to hair follicles, which are tube-like structures just under the surface of your skin. They are the birthplace of hair, and every strand of your body has a hair follicle. Protein cells accumulate and create a hair root, and the nearby blood vessels supply the nutrients it requires to grow. Hair strands will mature over time and reach your skin’s surface and beyond.
The shape of your hair follicles will determine the texture and appearance of your hair, and oblong follicles will create curly hair, while round follicles will create straight hair. Follicles also contain two types of pigment that will determine the colour of your hair, and as we age, our body will slow down its melanin production, and without the pigment, hair will turn white or grey.
Hair Growth
Hair goes through three different growth phases and then repeats the cycle throughout your life. These phases include:
- Anagen – The growth phase. Cells in your follicles will multiply and divide rapidly during this active growth phase, and up to 90% of your hair will be in this phase at any given time. This can last 2 to 6 years, and the longer your hair stays in this growth phase, the longer your hair will grow.
- Catagen – The transition phase. Follicles will shrink at the end of the anagen phase, and hair will detach from its blood supply. Growth with slow to a halt, and this stage generally last about 2 to 4 months.
- Telogen – The resting phase. Your hair will fall out of the follicle during this phase, and even though this is called the resting phase, your follicles will work hard to generate new cells to maintain the hair growth cycle.
Laser Hair Removal in North Vancouver
This treatment is based on the theory that damaged follicles stop producing hair, and a professional can accurately target the source and render your skin hairless. Laser technology is used to target follicles, and a quick zap will destroy them to prevent them from growing hair in the future. Multiple sessions will be required to treat all the hairs as they cycle through the active phases, and this treatment can be used anywhere on your body, including the arms, legs, bikini area, armpits, back and face.
